Stash

I have to admit that our ancestors got very creative when it came to hiding things.

Have you ever had the opportunity to help pack up or Spring clean one of your elders home. Offer to help if you can, you’ll be amazed at everything you’re be seeing. . . read on to see what Craig and Carla found.

An hour later, that metal bowl held 4 pearl necklaces, 6 gold wedding rings, 3 diamond solitaire rings, small gold chains, some larger chains and a few paintings of families along with photos, they had been rolled up tightly with thread, all held at the hemlines. “They’re a little wrinkledbut, I think they’ll be ok once the papers relax. Then we can flatten them Craig.”

The collar and rolled cuffs of the sable produced, loose rubies, the hem loose emeralds. “Carla I would never have thought about checking the coats like that, guess I know why that suitcase was so heavy.” Craig stated smiling at Carla.

“What did you’re treasure hunt uncover Craig?” Carla asked standing up and stretching. “Well, this one chest had a false bottom and held a stack of Francs in various denominations, and a gun. This other trunk had pictures and letters plus these silver and gold crosses.”

Craig bragged smiling. “What did you find in the photo frames Craig?” Carla asked when she saw Craig with a big smile. “Oh yeah, just these two, they had envelopes with big horse blanket dollars.”

The rain had stopped and the sun was setting as they came down the stairs. The attic was finished for the time being. “Yeah, cleaning is done and rain stopped I need fresh air Craig, let’s run.” They took off on a long run to clear their heads and talk about what they still need to do.

Why are these coats so heavy?

Last week Carla had a hunch about the fur coats and this week we see why those coats were heavy.   . . . “Craig do you remember the tales we heard in school, about the Holocaust and how people were only taking what was on their back as they fled the Nazi’s?” Carla saw a glimmer in his eyes “Sure, wait a minute you think there maybe items stashed inside these coats.”

“Yes, that WWI dress got me to thinking. Since these furs are heavy and in dire need of cleaning I think they may be in need of alterations as well!” Craig replied to her statement “You think Judith left that WWI dress in the trunk as a clue. That sounds like something Grand Judy would do. What else should we check?”

“All of those photo frames, inside and the linings on all these trunks, especially those 2 smaller ones Craig.” “I’m on it, what should I use Carla?” “This box cutter should work, run very close inside along the outer edges.”

“Oh Craig I need your help, I need these hanging so I can cut the thread. The coat rack from our room would be perfect and a couple of the heavy wooden hangers please.” Craig took off to the bedroom saying, “Coming up” Craig’s hands were full, “Where do you want this?”

“Here will be fine.” Carla sat Indian style, inserted the seam ripper into the heavy thread, taking caution to maneuver the sharp end of the seam ripper to get started. “I want to watch you do  his. Need any help Carla.” He asked her.

“Yes, actually you can hold this corner and the bowl when I start to slice the thread.” A pinging sound filled the room as the items fell out of the coat’s hem into the small metal bowl. “You were right Carla” Craig scratched his head, “I’ll be a monkey’s uncle look at all this, WOW!”

What’s Hidden Now?

Craig placed a call to Blackie about the rings and Aileen. Carla put some sweet rolls in the oven for breakfast. So their day started they decided to finish cleaning up the attic since the rain and wind was stronger.

“Well that takes care of these trunks Carla. I would have thought there would have been decorative things, and maybe clothes. They never threw anything away. Look at all the papers we found and the cash boxes in the floor boards.”

“Then there were the diamonds, Craig.” Carla said getting up from the floor. “Almost forgot, we better check those bottles of champagne. What’s wrong, you usually aren’t speechless Carla.” Craig just kept looking at her, she had that I am thinking look. “I’m going for those bottles Carla, be right back.”

Craig went to the wine cellar looking for the 1943 Dom Perignon champagne, there was only three bottles left, but it looked as if there had been more setting there recently from the indentation in the packing. He brought the remaining bottles up “Carla, did you bring any of those 1943 Dom bottles up here?”

“No Craig, I’ll be right back could you get me those furs please?” “You want all of them?” Craig questioned with a puzzled look on his face.

Carla replied, “Yes please.” Craig came into the room with the furs in his hands “Now you really have my curiosity up, what’s with the bowl and that lethal thing?”

“This is a seam ripper Craig.” Carla thought for a moment about how to say what she was thinking so he would understand. “Craig do you remember the tales we heard in school, about the Holocaust and how people were only taking what was on their back as they fled the Nazi’s?”

Carla saw a glimmer in his eyes “Sure, wait a minute you think there maybe items stashed inside these coats.”

Mark’s Call

Before the Jewelry chest dilemma there was a phone call from Mark …  Here’s what surprised Carla.

“Craig what did Mark want?” …

“Actually there is a big craft show in Champaign near the U of I campus, guess they went last year and really liked it, thought we would too.”

“Oh he’s out of the hospital already? He’s able to do a lot of walking, cause I was at that show years ago, it covers a big area?” Carla said, “I do not know how someone recuperating from an auto accident can do that much walking.

“Guess so, he sounds like the Mark I know. You know I think he has a drinking problem, hope this recent accident wakes him up!” Craig just shrugged his shoulders and went back to reading the paper.

“I don’t think he got your subtle message at the airport,” Carla commented as Craig said, “That’s what I was thinking he just doesn’t get the fact that I’m not his free ticket any more. I’m not sure how else to tell him though.” She asked, “Worried about feelings being hurt Craig?”

“Yes!” “Carla, have you talked to Paula since the accident?” He asked. “I called a couple of times, but she has not called me back. I’ll try her again tomorrow.” Carla commented, “I’m ok about going if you want to go Craig.”
