Wake Up

Trusting that your body will wake you up at the normal time, you forgo setting the alarm cause it was the weekend…

Amy and Blackie arrived Saturday morning at 8 AM for the craft show to find the house quiet. They had to ring the doorbell several times. Craig came down the steps first. “Good morning come on in, sorry we overslept.”

“That’s ok, I’ll start the coffee pot, Craig,” Amy said.

Blackie went out the door saying, “I’ll get your papers. Take your time.”

“Looks like you two have been busy since I was here. You have wrought iron fencing and the whole back yard looks different Craig,” Amy said.

“Yes, a little project turned into a major one, some of this was done before you were her last, I think.”

Carla came down the steps a little less spry than normal “Good morning,” Carla said. Amy poured a big mug of coffee for everyone.

Craig started to tell Amy about the changes. “Billy, Mary, Tommy, Tim, Mary’s Dad, and Howard helped Carla and I finish our jar harvesting, turned out to be more treasure in the flower bed, which had to be moved in order to get the garage built.” Craig said
rubbing his biceps.

“Howard had to lift those angel statues.”

“You would have had to see it to believe it.” Carla said as she started to laugh. “Hope no one had a video camera on us.”

“Sledge hammers going at angels and stepping stones. “We’ll be right back guys,” Craig said as they went up to change.

The foursome headed out for the craft show, chatting as they drove about all the latest news and gossip since they were together last. Parking the car, they started to walk over to the show stopping in front of the restaurant. “Ok, everyone got their phones on, we’ll meet back here at 1,” Blackie said.

“Let the shopping begin,” Amy said taking Carla’s hand. “This looks
like a real fun day.”

Carla winked at her friend. “Remind me that this is a play day Amy,” Carla said smiling.

“Carla, I can do that. You two have really had a busy and rather rough time since you got married. You my dear are one tough cookie. You’d make a good cop, too.” Amy said
grinning.

“Oh really, Amy I’ve gone through more tissues in a month than I did all year. Yes, what a challenge it has been! I still am having some nightmares over it. With Craig’s help, I am getting over the rough spots. Ooh scarves,” Carla exclaimed pulling Amy into the booth.

The men headed out to the building and equipment area of the show. “So Craig, what caused all the extra construction and fencing, the invasion?”

Info Overload

The more we know somehow feels like overload,  yet our grey matter opens up to process something else we don’t know…

Howard parked in front of the town hall and they walked into the Mayor’s office to see Lucille. “After noon Lucille is the Mayor in?”

“Yes Mr. Awls, he is waiting for the two of you, go on in.”

“Afternoon Mayor Awls” Craig said holding out his hand as they walked in the door.

James took Craig’s hand and pulled him in close, “Craig my boy, how are you? Howard, my son” James hugged him.

“So what have the two of your discovered today? Is your mind all mush Craig from the information Howard’s been pouring on you?” James asked pointing to the chairs for the two to sit in as he went behind his desk. “You here to pick up those papers I assume.”

“Yes sir, and yes to your previous questions. But the information is starting to sink in slowly.” Craig stated as he shifted in his chair. “I’m discovering my Dad wasn’t such a . . .” Craig couldn’t think of the right word to say.

“Craig I think I know what you’re trying to say. Auggy wasn’t all drink, he was a smart cookie when he was sober, wasn’t he?” James stated looking over at Craig.

“Yes so I am discovering. I will probably be asking you questions about him in the future. You Mr. Awls are my so called lifeline, you knew Dad and CJ, plus you knew CA as well.” Craig admitted.

“Yes Craig, anytime just ask.”

“Here are those papers Howard, you two need anything else, let me know. Otherwise, I will be seeing you two Monday morning. Hope we get to have some of that wonderful coffee cake for our break. Gotta run to a meeting, see you later” James stood putting some papers in his portfolio.

“How much more Howard” Craig asked as they got in the Hummer.

“A lot” Howard smiled.

“Let me guess, The Children’s Home?” Craig asked as Howard nodded his head, “Yes that’s the old Beardsley home.”

Craig nodded “I assume the General Store on Center and Lake is ours.”

“Yes and we built the church too.”

“Now I’m starting to understand,” Craig said as Howard smiled.

“So I see, Craig.” Howard pulled into the Awlsport Café and ran in leaving Craig in the Hummer with his note pad writing. “What have you got there, Howard?”

Mind Blowing

There are different family inheritance treasures, never the same, always interesting, once in a while you  think you know your relatives, then you discover their unknown secrets …

“Yep, I’ve always thought this would be a good area for a resort, since it is so close to Chi Town by way of US 41!” Craig was nodding his head as he started writing on the legal pad. “Notation made, your partner is in agreement. I can almost envision it. Can we walk around the property Howard? How many acres are there?” Craig asked.

“Sure got walking shoes on Craig?”

Howard asked as Craig looked down at his shoes, “Ah no, how about tomorrow for a walk?”

“Ok that’s better. You know I would like to walk that farm land too, see how it would fit a golf course Craig.”

“Ditto on that partner.”

“I’m not sure Jonesy about the acreage, our papers should tell us that exactly.”

“Ok I made a note. This is giving me a great idea here Howard. Resort possibility is endless here, let’s drive into town slowly.” Craig patted Howard’s back.

“Got it, you might want to jot down the corners, trust me it’s going to come in handy Craig.” Howard slowed down and pulled in an empty parking place.

“This corner of Center and James; I own north and south, Craig you own east and west.” “Howard you mean AJ Inc. owns this corner?”

“Yep, we own the property, not all the buildings, just like the bank building here on Ohio and Center, some of these businesses are on a 100 year lease. We just renewed some of them. The corner where the VFW is, Center and Main, we own the property and building.” Howard
said then looked over at Craig who was feverously writing as he was listening. Howard raised an eyebrow, and shift in his position in the seat with that sinister look of his he smiled.

Craig suddenly looked up at Howard, “What? This is mind blowing I had no idea. Gee why did we live in Waukegan, when we had all this here?” Craig was now scratching his head and shaking it. He gazed out the window in silence.

“Howard I had no idea. I’ve not found much about this in all the papers so far!”

Howard nodded his head and said “Craig that’s because your Dad had everything important put into my Dad’s safe.”

Craig eyes lit up as a wide smile formed on his face, “So he really did clean stuff out of the house before he closed it up!”

Howard smiled, “Yes Craig and when we get back I have something very interesting to
show you and Carla. Now let’s get those papers, it’s starting to rain, the walk will have to wait Craig.”

Briefcase?

Promptly at 8, Howard pulled in with a big briefcase in hand. “Morning ready to learn, Craig?” Howard asked as he said, “Carla we need coffee and water, no interruptions, I’ll call your cell if we need you ok.”

“Yes, Mr. Awls.”

Craig and Howard walked into the library and closed the big oak pocket doors behind them. Craig sat at the big desk as Howard pulled up the gold library chair up to the front keyhole of the old oak desk to face Craig.

“So Howard tell me, just how dependent is this town on me?” Craig asked.

Howard suggested, “Grab a pen and legal pad partner.”

“This is more than the oil and gas wells then.”

“Yes sir it is!”

“Here is how we are so deeply involved.” Howard said pulling out a large binder from his big briefcase and putting it on the desk with a thud.

“Wow” Craig said as he closed his mouth. “Do I need to make copies of this?”

“Nope it’s your papers! This is what we have to go over and make sure that we have this set up as partners. This was in Dad’s safe, everything in there has your name on it already; your Father had transferred all of it to you when he got sick, all the proceeds have been in the trust fund. That is the Awlsport account I just showed you the other day.”

Howard laid down a report in front of Craig, “This is all current as of this morning?”

Craig looked up, “This is the Awlsport Bank account, but how come the dollars are higher than the other day Howard?” Craig asked as he looked over the report and went to his laptop.

“Craig this account fluctuates daily depending on what the wells production is and the price per barrel. When Dad first explained this, I drove myself nuts looking at it every day. Now once a month I look at it, then move some over when I need to.”

“OK!” Craig pushed back his chair and pointed to the table. “We had better move all this to the table so we can spread out. Let’s see how well I understand this, and get this into my gray matter Howard!”

“This may take all day Craig.” Howard said as he handed Craig his black & gold Mont Blanc roller ball pen.

Partnership

Craig took a deep breath. “There are 2 H & A businesses; the security is H&A with no spaces between the letters, that’s how you can tell the difference. H & A involves a lot of businesses, in the partnership that Howard, James and I have.”

He thought for a minute before he continued, “There’s the marina, ironworks, security, auto repair, properties; and then I think Howard’s sculpture is tied in there as well.”

“Anyway, all three do their business through Awlsport Bank, plus there is a separate account in my name, we need to open a joint account here.Actually I have thought of closing out the Centerville accounts and just moving it all here.”

“I agree with that Craig. We go to Carpenter now more than Centerville,” Carla said with a smile.

“Good, then we have made our first financial decision together, we’ll do that.”

“Ok let’s see what Awlsport Bank has to tell us, Carla.” Craig had to look up his log in information, “Just did this yesterday for the first time, here we go.”

“Ok Craig, so this explains why Howard’s been hounding you so much. This shows just how very important you are to this community. I now understand my bodyguard a whole lot more.”

Carla looked up “Craig you never knew about this?”

“No not until the other day. I never even got a report, don’t know why but I’m sure the IRS will want to see this now. That’s another headache to come in a few months.”

“This is why Howard said we are spending all next week filling my brain not only with H&A work but, explaining all this to me.”

“Craig you need some tax deductions.”

“Yes and you’re the first, and of course the kids will be too.”

“No I mean charities, like The Children’s Home and the Church Pantry.”

“Carla that’s perfect, I’ll do that tomorrow when Howard and I meet.” Craig jotted this down on a big notepad.

Banking Talk

“Now back to business Mrs. Jones, focus here ok?” Craig said pointing to his computer screen. “Yes Mr. Jones, I’m ready to learn.”

“Carpenter Bank & Trust: Money Market, Certificates of Deposit, Checking, Visa, Safe Deposit Box. I pay the bills with this account here in Bill Pay.” Craig opened the account up on-line. Where she could see all the balances of each as he checked the item, moving to each one after Carla acknowledged she understood.

“Ok, this is our joint account, so this where all the bills come into, because I haven’t seen any in the mail?” She asked looking to Craig for an answer.

“Yes I’m all electronic for bills. Hate the taste of stamps and filing papers don’t need to with Bill Pay.”

“Any questions, Carla?”

“Just one Craig this is the account I draw from for cash and when I use the ATM card? Cause I haven’t been putting it down anywhere.” Carla shrunk down in her chair, her teeth showing tightly together and made a face that said oh I am in so much trouble.

“That’s ok: I’ve got it all right here on the computer, just be sure to ask if it’s going to be a really large amount. Actually, I think you can’t get more than 500 a day with that card. I doubt you’d be using it for that amount anyway, right? Of course this has to be used at Costco or the AE card.”

“Yes Craig, I’m sorry I’ll remember to place the receipts on your desk so you can record them in the ledger, Carla kissed his cheek, move on Craig.”

Craig smiled and continued. “Centerville Savings Bank: Checking, Savings, CD’s, and Master Card.” “Ok this isn’t your main account and it’s not a joint account?”

“I know we need to change this one, next time we go to Centerville. I think we should go to the Grill and take care of this.”

“I agree move on,” Carla said.

Tossing and turning all night, Craig finally got up at 4:30 AM going down to his library and closing the door. Craig thought, shit I hate this but I have to do it today. He turned on the hand held recorder and dialed the phone, placing the call he had been dreading.
“Mr. Samuel White, This is Craig Augustus Jones the III. I have to inform you that I will no longer be using your services. I do not believe that you have my best interest at heart anymore and my life goals and agenda have changed. Thank you for your services.
Please forward all documents and personal items to my residence at
#1 East Lake Road, Awlsport, IN forthwith.”
He turned off the recorder, thinking to himself. I used to value your
advice and your friendship but you are not who I thought you were
Samuel, you betrayed me!
Craig turned his chair to the window and sat there with his hands folded
and watched as the sunrise developed and said. “Oh Lord, My Maestro,
erase my sadness and paint me some joy, thanks for putting Carla in my
life to show me who my real friends are.”
“Craig,” Carla said knocking softly on his door. “Yes honey, you can
come in perfect timing coffee and my sugar!” He wrapped his arms
around her and nibbled on her neck causing her to moan and squirm.
“Morning” she said softly, “I missed you.” “No problem I’m here now,”
kissing her as he backed her up to the sofa . . .
